Seizures Q & A

Seizures are common. In general, about one in 10 people will have a single seizure in their lifetime. Febrile seizures affect about 2 to 5 percent of children in the U.S., and often run in families.

People often associate seizures with dramatic symptoms, but that is not always the case.  Signs and symptoms vary depending on the type of seizure a person has and what part of the brain is involved.  A seizure may cause temporary, uncontrolled loss of consciousness. Some children may stare off into space and experience confusion until the seizure is over. Soen children display a variety of additional observations (such as lip smacking), sudden jerks and others.

Seizures are treatable. Many children outgrow their tendency to have them. An accurate diagnosis can help doctors find the most effective treatment and evaluation by qualified providers is essential to understand diagnosis, recommend specific testing and focus treatment in an individual basis.
