EEG

An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a simple in-office test that lets your doctor evaluate your brain’s electrical activity. The board-certified physicians at PANDA Neurology & Atlanta Headache Specialists provide routine EEGs, as well as ambulatory EEGs and Video EEGs. If you need an EEG, schedule an appointment at this Atlanta-area neurology practice today. Click on the online scheduler or call to book a visit over the phone.

What is an EEG?

EEG – electroencephalogram- is the cornerstone test for the diagnosis of epilepsy.

EEG measures electrical activity in the brain. The test uses small, metal discs called electrodes that attach to the scalp. Brain cells communicate via electrical impulses, and this activity shows up as wavy lines on an EEG recording. A trained physician interprets the test. There are no needles and no pain on getting this test.

There are different types of EEG : Routine studies (in office), Ambulatory EEG (home based study for 24h or longer), Video EEG (Ambulatory EEG with simultaneous video recording). Type of study to be completed depends on the individual patient’s clinical needs.

The test helps diagnose the type of epilepsy, response to treatment and characterize spells. It is often used in conjunction with MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) to help the provider determine the best treatment options.
